Luzerne County election board to start review of write-in votes Monday - 69News WFMZ-TV

The Luzerne County Board of Elections will begin its review of write-in votes from the Nov. 8 election on Monday, board Chairwoman Denise Williams said.

The board has about 1,700 write-in votes to review, as well as about 300 ballots that included over-votes, in which a voter selected more than one candidate, Williams said.

She said she is confident the board will finish its adjudication of those ballots by Tuesday, the deadline for counties to report completed vote counts to state officials.

There are fewer write-in votes to consider from the Nov. 8 general election than there were in last year’s municipal election, which featured numerous local races more likely to generate write-in votes, Williams said.

However, the board might stay late Monday if needed to make sure it completes its review of write-in votes by the deadline, she said.

That review is scheduled to start at 9 a.m. in Courtroom A on the third floor of the county-owned Penn Place Building in Wilkes-Barre. If all goes well, the day’s effort will end around 4 p.m., since the building closes to the public at 4:30 p.m., Williams said.

The election board is on track to certify the results of the general election on Nov. 28, she said.

The Nov. 8 election was marred by a shortage of ballot paper at dozens of polling sites in the county. Some voters were forced to cast provisional or emergency ballots, while others left polling sites without voting.

The election board has not received an explanation of what caused the problem, Williams said.
