By Divyanshi Sharma: OpenAI introduced ChatGPT to the world in November 2022 and it ushered in the age of Artificial Intelligence (AI). After nearly six months of its launch, ChatGPT is being used across the world and people are finding new ways to use the technology each day. While some are using it to compose poetry and music, others are trying to make use of the chatbot in the day-to-day lives. And then there are people who are using ChatGPT to be more productive at work.

And the employees of a software company are doing just that. They are using ChatGPT to write code, and wrap up months of work in a couple of days.
Software company employees using ChatGPT
Software company Freshworks' employees CEO, in an interview, said that the work that used to take months is now getting done in weeks as the company's employees are using ChatGPT to write code.
CEO Girish Mathrubootham told Fortune, "We use ChatGPT to write code," and added that software development that used to take around 8-10 weeks can now be done 'in less than a week'.
This is not the first time that a company confirmed using AI to increase productivity. A lot of mid-size as well as large tech firms are warming up to the idea of using AI tools in the future.
While on one side, these tools can help employees get more done in a short span of time, there is a negative side to the story as well. Some people believe that AI will, one day, replace software development roles altogether as tools like ChatGPT, Bing and Bard become more advanced.
Jobs at risk from ChatGPT
On a related note, a recent survey by Goldman Sachs suggested that generative AI tools like ChatGPT have the potential to automate approximately 300 million full-time jobs across the world.
When ChatGPT was asked if it could replace software engineers in their jobs, the chatbot gave a balanced answer. It said that even though AI tech is useful in 'mundane and repetitive tasks', it can improve the efficiency of software engineers as they will have more time to focus on complex and creative sides of their jobs.
“AI technologies can be useful in automating repetitive and mundane tasks, assisting in code generation, or even aiding in debugging and testing processes. This can potentially improve the efficiency and productivity of software engineers by allowing them to focus on more complex and creative aspects of their work. AI can also be used to enhance software development processes, such as automated testing and quality assurance," the chatbot's answer read.
Only time can tell the effect of ChatGPT and other generative AI tools on the job market. As of now, these tools are being used by more and more companies and we are all still learning how to use them to the best of their capabilities.
