Samsung launched its second foldable phone, the Galaxy Z Flip, alongside the Galaxy S20 series in 2020. Unlike the original Galaxy Fold, the Galaxy Z Flip featured a clamshell design, with a tiny screen on the outside and a regular-sized foldable display within. The Galaxy Z Flip didn’t offer great hardware for its price, so it wasn’t as well-received as the Galaxy Fold. Therefore, Samsung updated it a few months down the line with a Snapdragon 865 Plus chip and 5G support.
While the second-gen device offered better performance, it wasn’t a huge improvement over the original Galaxy Z Flip. So it wasn’t as exciting of an upgrade as the Galaxy Z Fold 2 was for the flagship foldable line. Samsung has now launched the third device in its Galaxy Z Flip lineup, and the Galaxy Z Flip 3 brings some major improvements to the table.
The all-new Galaxy Z Flip 3 features an upgraded design with a larger cover display, a more durable construction, and a new high refresh rate display on the inside. It also features Qualcomm’s flagship Snapdragon 888 chip and several new software features to help you make the most of the foldable display. Best of all, it’s a fair bit cheaper than its predecessors, which will likely attract more buyers. If you’re planning on getting the Galaxy Z Flip 3, here’s everything you should know about the device.

Design & Build
Like the Galaxy Z Fold 3, the Galaxy Z Flip 3 is a bit more compact than its predecessor. However, it features more noteworthy design changes. For starters, the device now has a significantly larger cover display next to the rear-facing dual-camera setup. This new cover display and camera setup are housed within a black glass section in the top half of the back panel, giving the device a two-tone finish. These changes give the Galaxy Z Flip 3 a completely fresh look.
As far as the build quality is concerned, the Galaxy Z Flip 3 also has the new Armor Aluminum chassis, which Samsung claims is their strongest aluminum frame yet. It features Gorilla Glass Victus on both halves of the back panel, and it even offers IPX8 certifications for water resistance. On top of that, the Galaxy Z Flip 3 also features a new protective film on the foldable display that is 80% more durable than the previous models. Samsung made some significant changes to the device’s internal design to make it water-tight. You can learn more about these changes here.
Displays
The Galaxy Z Flip 3 packs an improved 6.7-inch FHD+ Dynamic AMOLED panel on the inside. It has a resolution of 2640 x 1080p, a pixel density of 425 PPI, and a peak refresh rate of 120Hz with adaptive refresh rate support. As mentioned in the previous section, the display features a new stretchable PET layer for added durability.
While the previous phones in the Galaxy Z Flip lineup offered tiny outer displays, the one on the new Galaxy Z Flip 3 is much more useful. It’s an AMOLED panel that measures 1.9-inch diagonally, making it four times larger than the outer display on the Galaxy Z Flip 5G. It has a resolution of 250 x 512p and a pixel density of 302 PPI. Thanks to the additional screen real estate, the phone can now display up to four lines on the outer screen. In addition, Samsung has included a couple of handy widgets and customization options for the outer screen.
SoC, RAM, & Storage
The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 3 packs Qualcomm’s flagship Snapdragon 888 chip. The 5nm octa-core chip features one Kryo 680 prime core (ARM Cortex X1-based) clocked at 2.84GHz, three Kryo performance cores (ARM Cortex A78-based) clocked at 2.4GHz, and four Kryo 680 efficiency cores (ARM Cortex A55-based) clocked at 1.8GHz. The SoC is paired with 8GB of RAM and 128GB or 256GB of UFS 3.1 storage.
Cameras
While Samsung is offering some significant design and display improvements with the Galaxy Z Flip 3, the company hasn’t made any changes to the camera setup on the device. It still features the same dual-camera setup as the Galaxy Z Flip 5G, consisting of a 12MP f/1.8 main camera and a 12MP f/2.2 ultra-wide camera. For selfies, the device features the same 10MP f/2.4 camera as its predecessor, which is housed within a hole-punch cutout on the inner display.
The main 12MP shooter offers Dual Pixel Auto-focus, optical image stabilization (OIS), HDR10+ video recording, and Tracking AF support. The 12MP ultra-wide camera has a 123˚ Field of View, and it doesn’t offer OIS or AF capabilities. The 10MP selfie shooter also misses out on OIS and AF functionality.
Connectivity
Since the Galaxy Z Flip 3 packs a Snapdragon 888 chip, which features an integrated 5G modem, the device offers 5G support. It offers support for both Sub6 and mmWave 5G (SA/NSA). In addition, it offers 4G LTE connectivity, Wi-Fi 6, and Bluetooth 5.1. Other connectivity options include a USB Type-C port and NFC.
One UI
The Galaxy Z Fold 3 runs Samsung’s One UI skin on top of Android 11 out of the box. Much like One UI for the Galaxy Z Fold 3, Samsung has included a couple of software optimizations on the Galaxy Z Flip 3 to help you make the most of the foldable display.
These include a Flex Mode, native app optimizations, customization features for the cover display, and more. At the moment, we don’t have all the details regarding the software enhancements. We’ll update this post as soon as we have more info.
